The Importance of Exfoliation

The human skin is made out of three general layers, the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous. The subcutaneous layer is where the fats are. It is so deep into the skin that no skin care products, even given through a needle, can penetrate.

The dermis is the layer where the sweat glands and blood vessels are located. Some skin care products by prescription only are able to temporarily restructure the skin by increasing collagen production in the dermis. However, since the penetration is so deep, there are undesirable side effects which will be apparent until the skin gets adapted to the treatment.

The epidermis is the layer apparent to the naked eye. The top most layer of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum, commonly known as the dead skin cells. Under normal circumstances, the skin cell renews itself every 28 days, revealing fresh and smooth skin. However, aging and pollution can slow the process down by several times, causing skin to look dull and lifeless as a result of accumulated dead skin cells on the surface.

Skin that appears dull and rough is commonly due to the uneven reflection of light. The uneven reflection of light is in turn due to the build up of dead skin cells on certain parts of the skin. To counter this problem, the dead skin cells must be manually removed if the skin renewal process is slower than desirable.

One of the safest and most effective ways to remove dead skin cells is through exfoliation. Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells using gentle abrasion. Manual exfoliation provides the option of which areas to target on as well as the intensity. However, it is paramount that the appropriate materials are used as damage of the skin may be difficult to reverse.

DermaSand is made out of medical grade aluminium oxide crystals cut to the right size to exfoliate even the finest pores. The strength of exfoliation is entirely decided by the user. As such, even the most sensitive skin can benefit from this manual exfoliation. The results can be seen and felt after the first usage. Regular exfoliation will guarantee baby smooth and soft skin.
